providing a second life
for our valleys most precious resource
Welcome to Les Bois Milling, Boise’s newest urban sawmill. We specialize in live edge slabs from trees collected and milled right here in the City of Trees. I know what you’re asking yourself, what does “Les Bois” mean? Well as a Boise native let me tell you what I learned in elementary school. This valley was settled by French/Canadian fur trappers in the early 1800’s as the Oregon Trail was being forged. When they came down off the rolling foot hills in covered wagons for the first time they exclaimed “Les Bois, Les Bois!”. Which translates to, “The Woods, The Woods”. They knew then as we know now that the trees of this valley are special and one of our most precious resources.
Whether you’re a contractor looking for intriguing accents for a new build or a woodworker hunting for your next project material,
we have live edge wood slabs that will wow you.
At Les Bois Milling, we focus on slicing wide, live-edge slabs that showcase extensive curl, with unique colors, knots, and edges. Once milled, the slabs are placed in our on-site kiln for slow drying.
The kiln drying process is crucial to prevent warping, checking, or cracking. By slowly reducing the moisture content over time in a controlled environment, we ensure the dense, figured wood dries in a way that preserves its one-of-a-kind character. Kiln-dried wood slabs don’t change significantly when they’re worked into furniture, flooring, paneling, or art.
We take special care with large slab lots from prized species like Black Walnut, Oak, and American Chestnut to maximize their potential for carpentry and turned projects.
We carry a wide range of slab sizes, and our inventory changes constantly, so just call us to see what’s new. We’re always happy to help you find the perfect wood for your project needs. [Live Edge Slabs]
After drying, our experienced slabbing team runs the flatsawn boards through specialized machinery to refine the surfaces further and straighten any minor warps. This slab flattening stage creates flat, smooth material ready for all your projects.
We offer an ever-changing mix of stunning wood species. Here are a few you’re sure to love:
With hues that range from soft pink and gold to dramatic maroon browns, these slabs have bold, defined look. Silver Maple is versatile for furniture, paneling, and flooring.
Dark reddish-brown heartwood and tight grain make Scots Pine durable and beautiful for paneling, doors, or furniture.
With its stunning golden shades, Russian Olive is a real showstopper. Experiment with turning, carving, or burning patterns into this unique wood.
Deep chocolate brown with darker stripes, Black Walnut is stunning for live-edge tables, or accent walls. Its hardness also makes it excellent for flooring and stairs.
Ash has blonde to greenish tones with dramatic dots and swirls. It is strong and smooth-grained, prized for furniture, molding, and bar tops.
Warm honey-colored oak slabs with darker accents are a favorite for live-edge benches, bar tops, and horizontal siding.
Now nearly extinct due to blight, the remaining trees yield prized light to dark brown slabs great for live-edge furniture with a historical provenance.
At Les Bois Milling, we work with community forestry programs, tree care professionals, and the public to prevent trees from ending up in landfills. Our inventory control App, called AncesTREE, provides detailed information about the wood purchased, including the tree’s origin, age, species, moisture content, and more.
